Work experience staff work closely with local employers to find learning and career opportunities and to secure future work stations. In addition, staff make contact with you and your employer at least twice during the academic quarter to discuss your progress toward completing the learning objectives.

Enrolling

  1. You must contact Joanie Weatherly for information and assistance with the registration and placement process. You must make contact with Joanie prior to registering. Your hours can not be counted for credit until you have registered for the class and turned in the signed Learning Agreement Form to the Cooperative Work Experience Office. The first term that you enroll in a CWE 280 course, you must also take a 1 credit Work Experience Seminar (281) course.

  2. Complete and sign the student's basic Learning Agreement form. (.PDF)
This document clearly defines what you will achieve each quarter. This agreement includes Learning Objectives. Objectives should clearly define the tasks the student will successfully perform. Describe 'what' you are doing, 'how' you will accomplish it, and 'how' you will measure the successful completion of your learning objectives. The Learning Agreement must be signed by you, your employer/supervisor, your advisor, and the Director of Cooperative Work Experience.

What is Expected

  1. Read each item on this site to familiarize yourself with your responsibilities in regard to the time-line and deadlines for turning in required paper-work and documentation.
  2. Turn in monthly time sheets (.PDF, 47KB) at the end of each month. Time sheets must be signed by your supervisor. These time sheets are required to substantiate the student's hours.

  3. MID TERM REPORT: E-mail Work Experience Director, Joanie Weatherly, at the mid-term and submit your written mid-term report via e-mail (see Deadline Dates). Please respond to the following questions for this report:
      a. What tasks are you actually performing on the job as they relate to your established learning objectives?
    b. How are you using your academic and/or technical training courses in the workplace?
  4. E-mail your Term Summary Sheet (.PDF, 38KB) and Worksite Evaluation (.PDF, 43KB) by the end of the term. (see Deadline Dates).

  5. Meet with the employer weekly to discuss the progress of your learning. These meetings may be very brief or in depth. As problems or misunderstandings arise, these meetings provide the student and employer an opportunity to ask questions or suggest improvements in the learning situation.

  6. Ask your supervisor to complete a Student Evaluation form (see Forms page) and return it to the Cooperative Work Experience Office by the end of the term. (see Deadline Dates)

  7. Your field experience monitor will contact you and your employer to arrange two meetings per term. These meetings are arranged at the convenience of the employer and the student. These meetings rarely last longer than 15 minutes.

  8. Let us know if problems arise. If you are having problems on the job, please call the Cooperative Work Experience Director as soon as possible. We do not want students working in unsafe or unlawful conditions.

Identifying the Worksites
The Cooperative Work Experience office receives job opportunities from employers. Additionally, faculty in the area of expertise often know of possible job sites. You may also select a site and the Cooperative Work Experience staff will do an assessment of the work-site. Please let us know if you hear of any openings that may be suitable for other Cooperative Work Experience students.

Cooperative Work Experience Credits

  • You can earn one (1) college credit for each 33 hours spent at a worksite completing activities outlined in your approved learning agreement.
  • It is possible to earn as many as 11 credits per term if the student meets the program requirements.
  • The Work Experience Seminar (281) is an additional 1 credit. It is required of students the first time they enroll in Cooperative Work Experience at Clatsop Community College.

Grading

  • Work Experience is a pass/no credit course. (it is possible to earn a no credit or an incomplete if students do not meet the course requirements).
  • Completion of the total number of hours worked does not guarantee college credit.
  • College credits are earned by completing the course work and meeting the time lines.
  • Like any other college course, if a student does not meet the course work requirements, he or she will not earn the college credit. Consistently late reports, missed meetings or contacts, and insufficient hours will result in a grade of no credit.
  • If a student wishes to receive an incomplete at the end of the term in order to make up hours the following term, please request an Incomplete Form (.PDF, 12KB) before the end of the term from the Cooperative Work Exerience office.
