Clatsop Community College Offers Disaster Survival Workshop

On March 11, 2006, CCC brings together a number of experts to help individuals and families prepare for and survive a natural disaster.

Participants in the all-day workshop will learn through a wide range of activities, including observing the effects of cold water immersion; hearing Cameron Bangs, retired physician and cold injury expert (including veteran of over 50 Mt. Hood rescues efforts) explain how to stay alive in severe conditions; see Oregon coast earthquake and tsunami hazards illustrated by Dr. Curt Peterson, PSU Geologist, and Tom Horning, Geologist; and discuss the “Survivor Personality” with Dr. Al Seibert, author of The Resiliency Advantage and guest on the Oprah Show.

Pacific Power, Northwest Natural Gas, and ODOT will also present information about what to expect and what to do in the case of extended power outages and hazardous road conditions.

The cost of the workshop is $20 which includes lunch. ($25 if continuing education credits are requested). It will be held at the Columbia River Maritime Museum in Astoria from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., March 11, 2006.

The seminar is also open to public attendance.

The lunch speaker, Dr. Al Seibert, PhD, is from Portland. He is the author of “The Survivor Personality: Why Some People are Stronger, Smarter, and More Skillful at Handling Life’s Difficulties...and How You Can Be, Too.” His latest book is “The Resiliency Advantage: Master Change, Thrive Under Pressure and Bounce Back from Setbacks.”

The cold water survival portion will be presented by Dr. Cameron Bangs, a retired physician from Oregon City, who has years’ of experience with cold weather disasters.
