“AN INSTALLATION: THE BIG” by Richard Rowland and Jan Shield at Pacific University, December 2 to January 31, 2005.

Richard Rowland, Clatsop Community College Ceramics and Sculpture Instructor and head of the College’s Art Department, presents “AN INSTALLATION: THE BIG” at Pacific University’s Cawein Gallery of Art in Forest Grove, Oregon. The exhibit of “mindscapes in clay, painting, and environmental materials from Australia to Oregon” is in collaboration with Pacific University Art Professor Jan Shield. Rowland is a 1974 alumnus of Pacific University, and has recently completed his Master’s Degree at the Academy of Arts, University of Tasmania, Australia. The exhibit, with ceramics/sculptures by Rowland and paintings by Shield, features artwork inspired by their recent study together in Australia and Tasmania.

When asked about his work, Rowland said, “We are faced in our present time with a fragmented sense of place, so I am trying to reassert our individual sense of locality from a bioregional sensitivity that includes input from the whole community.”
