CCC Student Art Exhibit To Be Held At Grace Episcopal Church

An art exhibit by CCC art students will be on display at Grace Episcopal Church, 1545 Franklin Avenue, Astoria, from March 24 through April 26. The artwork may be viewed 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Sundays. Other viewing times may be arranged by appointment.

A reception for the artists will be held on Sunday, April 23rd from 11:15 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The artwork was created in the College’s drawing, painting, and design classes under the instruction of CCC Art Instructor, Kristin Shauck. The students would like to welcome all members of the community to view the show.

“ This is the first time my art has been shown, and I am very excited,” says Molly Norris. “After being uninspired for far too long, I decided to try taking a class at Clatsop Community College. That decision must have been one of the greatest I have made for my art. I have discovered so much in the past year, and am much more confident in pursuing my future career as an artist.”

“ I will be exhibiting two projects that I did in my CCC Design & Drawing classes. They were a lot of fun to construct, and I hope you get as much enjoyment out of looking at ‘em as I did making ‘em!” exclaims drawing and design student Bradley Knox.
Students of all experience levels will participate in the show, as Kaya McGrath describes, “I just started painting this winter term, and I feel like I have discovered a new world within myself. I no longer think of “mistakes” as something bad but more like a change and a new beginning. Painting is my new passion.”

Harry Comins, who enrolled in the introductory drawing sequence last fall, says, “After retiring from a left brain computer job, I am attempting to get my right brain involved again. The piece I am exhibiting is one step towards restoring the interest in art that I abandoned at age 13.”

Penny Treat, who will be displaying five of her figurative drawings, joined the figure drawing class this winter term. She says, “Discovery and delight is what I have enjoyed in Kristin’s drawing class this winter. Each student is offered an opportunity to learn with each lesson starting with basic anatomy, mapping, gesture, value, planar analysis, all methods of discovery that allow the student to develop in a rewarding, timely manner…..providing you work hard.”

Rhiannon McKinney describes her artwork created in the 3-D Design course: “This piece was designed for an art project that involved translating a famous two-dimensional work of art into a 3-D creation. My piece is a 3-D rendering of an oil painting by Kandinsky titled “Composition VIII.” I had fun creating this piece. I used a variety of materials and thought carefully about developing a creative solution to the assignment.”

Susan Romersa, who recently relocated to this area, reflects on her experience in the painting class: “Since moving to Seaside, Oregon from Las Vegas, Nevada, I’ve enjoyed continuing classes at Clatsop Community College and Kristin Shauck has been an excellent teacher – encouraging students to develop their interests and artistic goals on an individual basis. My background has been in PR and Marketing. Presently I’m concentrating on a more visual language in art and photography; and plan to take every advantage of the beautiful scenery on the Oregon coast to develop my visual skills.”
One of the objectives of the college as a whole is to inspire a commitment to lifelong learning. Tommy Rogers, who is enrolled in both the drawing and painting classes, affirms this in his comments: “I am 22 years old, and I have just hit the tip of the iceberg when it comes to me as an artist. Still I keep my mind and soul open to new possibilities. Keeping in mind I don’t know everything, and I’m not always right. As long as my brain can still think I will still be making art.”
