FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
5/10/06
The Annual Student Exhibition at Clatsop Community College Art Center
Gallery will be held May 22nd through June 12th. There will
be an opening reception for the students/artists on Tuesday, May 23rd
at
6:30 pm at the Art Center Gallery in Astoria.
The Student Exhibition is a juried event. This year’s
guest juror will be multi-media artist Storm Tharp of Portland, Oregon. Tharp
is known throughout the region for his exquisite skills as a draftsman,
and also for his sense of composition and concept. He is recognized
for his use of medium to illustrate an idea. It is more important
to Tharp to utilize material to convey information then being limited
to what the use of one particular medium dictates. Tharp has
a strong command of both two and three-dimensional work.
Tharp has twice been an award recipient from the Portland Art Museum’s
Oregon Biennial and has been included again in the 2006 Oregon Biennial. Tharp’s
work has been featured in the art publications ArtWeek and ArtNews. He
has also been the recipient of an Individual Fellowship awarded by the
Oregon Arts Commission in 2005 and his work has been included in private
collections nationwide. Tharp is currently represented
by PDX Gallery of Portland, Oregon.
The Student Exhibition will encompass all mediums currently taught within
the art department at Clatsop Community College, including painting,
printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, photography, computer graphics and
drawing. This exhibit will showcase the talent and diversity
of the art department’s students. During the opening
reception, cash prizes will be announced as well as the President’s
Choice Award. The President of Clatsop Community College,
Dr. Greg Hamann will present this award at the opening reception.
The Art Center Gallery will also be participating in the Arts Night Out
gallery walk of Astoria, the evening of Saturday June 10th.
The reception is free and open to the public. For more information
please contact Bill Ittmann or Teri Sund at 338-2478.
