Astoria High School Class of 1956 Visits CCC Campus
More than 16 members of the Astoria High School Class of 1956 gathered
on Friday to visit the Clatsop Community College campus as part of their
50-year reunion. Their class was among the last to attend Astoria High
School when it occupied the buildings that are now CCC’s Towler
and Patriot Halls. They came from as far away as Helsinki, Finland and
Sitka, Alaska, and from other communities throughout Oregon and Washington,
as well as from right here in Clatsop County.
During their visit, the AHS alumni took a tour of the campus, visiting
old sites and talking about memories of their high school days. Almost
a third of the group said that they had not been back to the campus since
graduating fifty years ago.
The general consensus among the group was that, while a few things still
looked the same, many things had changed since the campus was Astoria
High School. For example they pointed out the enclosures stairways that
connect Patriot and Towler Halls now, and of course, all the buildings
that now make up the CCC campus that weren’t there at the time,
such as Fertig Hall and the Learning Resource Center. Upon entering the
gymnasium, they recalled how much bigger it seemed back then, and pointed
out that there used to be an indoor track suspended from the ceiling.
The chemistry lab, however, looked so much the same that stirred up old
memories among the alumni of the many pranks played there.
During their visit, the AHS Class of 1956 also viewed plans for the new
campus project, and met with ASG President Curtis McBride, Phi Theta
Kappa President Jarrod Jackson and CCC’s President Dr. Greg Hamann.
