Astoria—
The North Coast Symphonic Band presents its first concert of the season
on Sunday, October 29, at 2 P.M., at the CCC Performing Arts Center,
16th and Franklin, in Astoria.
Titled “Across the Channel,” the concert features works from
the British Isles, France, and The Netherlands.
The 45+ members of the band are directed by Richard Boberg in his fourth
season with the 27-year old, regional ensemble.
Boberg says he became intrigued by the “wealth of musical literature
from both sides of the English Channel” while preparing for a 2005
British music concert. The current program offers a variety of old and
new, familiar and unfamiliar music.
The “William Byrd Suite” by Gordon Jacob consists of six
late- Renaissance English dance tunes.
“
Aquarium” by Dutch composer Johan de Meij is a fine example of
modern music. The three movements of this charming tone poem are “Neon
Tetra, Electric Eel, and Angelfish”; “Sea Horse and Zebra
Fish”; and “Guppy and Company.”
Familiar themes from Carmen, the ever-popular French opera by Georges
Bizet, are featured in a suite arranged by Jack Bullock.
The band will also play a medley of Glen Miller favorites that the
iconic swing bandleader performed while stationed in England in the
1940s.
John Hammond, award-winning director of bands for the Warrenton School
District, will conduct “Toccata for Band” by Frank Erickson,
noted contemporary composer for wind ensembles.
Tickets for the concert are $10 for regular admission, $8 for seniors
and students with I.D., and $6 for children under twelve.
Advance tickets can be purchased at Bach & Rock, 339 12th Street
in downtown Astoria, or at the door the day of the concert.
The CCC Performing Arts Center box office will open at 1 P.M. the day
of the concert, and the auditorium doors will open at 1:30 P.M.
Pre-concert entertainment will begin at 1:30 P.M. with swing music
by the Coffee Net Band of Ilwaco, Washington.
The North Coast Symphonic Band performs in partnership with Clatsop
Community College’s Arts and Ideas Program.
