CCC Presents “An Introduction to the Mathematics of Digital Communication”

Are you interested in digital communication? Clatsop Community College Mathematics Instructor Richard Beveridge presents “An Introduction to the Mathematics of Digital Communication” from 10 a.m. - noon Saturday, October 21 at CCC’s Library Conference Room.

The lecture covers the basic mathematics of matrices and binary modular arithmetic and their application to a single-error connecting Hamming code. Cell phones, satellites, DVDs, computers and the World Wide Web all use these error correcting codes, which allow them to operate with an acceptable level of bit errors. All digital communication involves a certain probability of errors in the bit-strings that are sent, received or stored. Error-correcting codes use mathematics to correct certain errors and thus improve the efficiency of digital communication.

The presentation will be followed by an opportunity to use Derive and Excel software to work with specific examples.
