RAIN Magazine Awarded Oregon Literary Fellowship; Deadline for 2007 Submissions
is January 10th
RAIN Magazine, Clatsop Community College’s literary publication,
has been awarded a $500 grant from Oregon Literary Fellowships. RAIN
Magazine joins the ranks of Calyx Journal and Poetry Northwest as was
one of six Oregon publishers to be awarded the fellowship, which received
over 300 applicants.
Oregon Literary Fellowships is a program of Literary Arts, a nonprofit
arts organization dedicated to “promoting the importance of language
as a means to express, explore and experience the world in which we live.” Other
Literary Arts programs include the Oregon Book Awards and Portland’s
Poetry in Motion project which posters city busses with diverse examples
of the contemporary poems.
"RAIN is such a wonderful tradition here in the community. It’s
great to be acknowledged and supported for our efforts,” says Nancy
Cook, Faculty Advisor for the magazine.
This is the second major grant the 30-year-old RAIN Magazine has received
this year. In May of 2006, the magazine received a $500 Spirit of Service
award from the Qwest Foundation. “It’s
fun to start the quarter with a positive cash flow,” says Cook, “but
our student staff will still be out there fundraising for the best publication
we can deliver.”
RAIN Magazine is produced by a student staff but relies on the donation
of private and business sponsors to help pay for printing, binding and
collation costs. The RAIN staff is looking forward to utilizing the grant
money to improve the quality of graphics and print more copies of this
year’s edition. The grants will also
help RAIN accomplish several of other goals, including the publication
of a special section commemorating this year’s tenth anniversary
of the Astoria Fisher Poet’s Gathering.
The deadline for 2007 submissions is quickly approaching. The magazine
welcomes submissions from the general public as well as CCC students,
and particularly seeks selections which capture the region s unique sense
of place. Submit 10 pages of prose, three poems, three photos or reproducible
artwork no later than WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 10, 2007.
This year’s publication will include a special section celebrating
the 10th Anniversary of Astoria's now famous Fisher Poets Gathering.
Writers and musicians who have presented at Fisher Poets Gathering are
encouraged to submit text of their performance pieces.
RAIN also welcomes photos and artwork of the Gathering, the Fisher Poets,
and/or commercial fishing in action. Include name, address, phone number
and email address on all entries. Include a SASE for return of manuscripts.
Otherwise, they will be recycled. Online submissions are welcome if submitted
as
a WORD or JPEG attachment.
Original artwork can be delivered to Fertig 3 on CCC s Jerome Avenue
campus.
