CCC Moves Ahead to Refurbish Jerome Avenue Campus

After thorough discussion of available options for improved facilities, the Clatsop Community College Board has authorized CCC President Greg Hamann to move ahead in developing plans for the renovation of the college’s main campus in Astoria.

"Although there are goals we could have achieved and educational benefits we could have provided on a new campus, we look forward to the creative challenges of doing as much as we can with what we have to meet our students’ needs,” said Board Chair Rosemary Baker-Monaghan.

Despite strong differences of perspective and opinion amongst themselves and within the community, Board members engaged in vigorous and meaningful discussion during the meeting held on Tuesday, June 12. They exhibited an openness to considering these differences and finding constructive compromise, emerging with a unified voice that provided Dr. Hamann and the College with clarity of direction.

“I am inspired by the different perspectives on this board and that we had an animated discussion of all our options,” said Dr. Hamann after the meeting. “We made a unanimous decision to move forward with the redevelopment of our current campus and to do so as a positive step toward of goal of access to quality education for all.”

The College has approximately $15 million to work with. Oregon Legislature authorized $7.5 million in 2005 and that money must be spent by July, 2009. This amount was matched by $7.5 million from the College. The College also plans to pursue opportunities for additional resources, if possible.

“It may seem to some as if we have changed our course, but it is clear to me that we have never changed our destination of providing the best possible learning environment for our students,” said Dr. Hamann.
