“Unexpected Amenities” Concert Features David Drury, Dave Captein
and Charlie Doggett
North Coast Guitarist David Drury presents the concert “Unexpected
Amenities,” focusing on Drury’s original compositions which
blend jazz, funk, folk and, as he says, “maybe a little bit of
R&B and country.” Joining Drury will be Portland-based bassist
Dave Capten and Charlie Doggett, on of Portland’s most talented
drummers.
“Unexpected Amenities,” sponsored by the Clatsop Community College
Foundation, starts at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 11 at Astoria’s Performing
Arts Center, located at 16th and Franklin. The concert will be a benefit
for CCC’s Arts & Ideas.
Drury selected the title “Unexpected Amenities” for the performance
because it describes what happens when the musicians improvise together
and the music flows.
“Unexpected things come up,” he explained. “This is an opportunity
for people to see Dave and Charlie- they’re phenomenal musicians—I’d
say they’re two of the best Jazz musicians in the country.’
Drury is most frequently referred to as a jazz guitarist. With over 40
years of experience as a professional guitarist involving several musical
styles, he can be considered a contemporary guitarist. Though he is known
for his ability to improvise and play jazz, his music is influenced and
inspired by many years playing rock, blues, jazz, country, classical,
swing and big band style standards and show tunes. He has performed regularly
at Astoria Golf and Country Club for 20 years, as well as venues that
include concerts at the CCC PAC, River Theater, Liberty Theater, Northwest
area restaurants and a variety of public and private social events.
Drury began playing professionally in the early 1960s. Upon graduation
from Phoenix College he attended Arizona State University as a music
major, and has performed in much of the US as well as recording with
a number of groups and artists in Phoenix, Tucson, Los Angeles and Portland.
Notable performances include concerts with the Phoenix Symphony, once
under the direction of Dave Rose and again with Percy Faith conducting.
In 1969, he and the group he worked with contracted with R.C.A. Records
and moved to L.A., where they recorded the album “Myrth,” which
contained 10 original songs. The record was released nationally and the
single, “Gotta Find A Way” was listed in Billboard’s
Magazine Poll. He moved to the Astoria area in 1983 and built a house.
He now divides his time between performing, writing and recording music
and is in his 16th year teaching guitar at Clatsop Community College,
as well as offering private instruction in Astoria.
Dave Captein is an accomplished performer on both string bass and bass
guitar, having worked as a professional musician for over 30 years in
the Pacific Northwest. A Portland native, he studied with Alice Leyden
(Portland Opera Orchestra) Herman Jobelmann (Principal, Oregon Symphony),
Ring Warner James Harnett (Principal, Seattle Symphony) and Chuck Deardorf
(Seattle Jazz Bassist). He is a music graduate of Western Washington
University and the University of Western Washington, where he was awarded
a composition scholarship. Captein has performed in a broad range of
situations, from symphonic performances to studio and club work, as well
as many jazz concerts and festivals around the country and in Europe.
He has appeared with such diverse and notable artists as Mose Allison,
Richie Cole, Tal Farlow, Art Lande, Red Holloway, Larry Coryell, Jessica
Williams (appearing in five of her CDs) and Wynton Marsalis among others,
and local luminaries such as Ron Steen, Mel Brown, Dan Balmer, Gary Hobbs
Rebecca Kilgore and Tom Grant. He has also been a longtime instructor,
teaching at the University of Oregon for 10 years. He now teaches privately
from his home in S.E. Portland.
Charlie Doggett, drummer/percussionist, is one of the most enigmatic
drummers in the Portland and greater Northwest music scene. He is a creative
and versatile musician who makes himself heard. Doggett earned a BA in
Music from the University of Oregon, where he studied with Charles Dowd
and Guy Versace. He has played with David Friesen, Darrell Grant, John
Gross, Doc Holliday, David Frishberg, Gary Versace, Greg Coghen, John
Stowell, Jerry Hahn, Randy Porter, Titos Sampa, Obo Addy, Rob Sheps and
the Eugene Symphony Orchestra. He has performed at British Columbia’s
du Maurier International Jazz Festival, the Medicine Hat Jazz Festival,
Alberta Canada and the Mt. Hood Festival of Jazz.
Tickets are $10 and are available at the PAC Box Office one hour before
the performance. For further information, contact Lenore Morrisson at
