NORTH COAST SYMPHONIC BAND PRESENTS MOZART SOLOISTS AND CONCERT BAND FAVORITES

“Mozart in May” is the theme of the late spring concert of the North Coast Symphonic Band on Sunday, May 4, at 2 P.M at the historic Liberty Theater in downtown Astoria. The featured piece for the afternoon will be three movements of a Mozart concerto performed by Allan Stromquist on French horn and Bridget Nurding on clarinet. Nurding is a senior at Astoria High School who placed first on clarinet in the District Solo and Ensemble competitions in 2005, 2006, and 2007. She also participates on the varsity swim, cross country and track teams at Astoria High School. Stromquist is a freelance musician who plays first horn with the Vancouver (WA) Symphony Orchestra. He attended the Mannes School of Music in New York and the Queens College Aaron Copland School of Music

In addition to the Mozart selections, the band will perform Light Calvary Overture by von Suppé, Selections from Chicago, and American Overture for Band. The program will include also traditional concert band marches and familiar tunes by Bach, Debussy, John Williams, and Henry Mancini. Lee Stromquist and John Hammond will share the conductor’s podium and Dave Robertson will serve as Master of Ceremonies.

The Rose City Mixed Quartet of Portland will provide the pre-concert entertainment starting at 1:30 P.M. The Rose City Mixed Quartet formed in the late 1980’s as a small group of the Portland Symphonic Choir. The purpose of the quartet was to present a cappella choral music from all ages and styles. This quartet has been together since 1996 and has toured throughout the Northwest and also several European countries.

Tickets to the North Coast Symphonic Band spring concert cost $10 (no surcharge). Children twelve and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Advance tickets are available at the Liberty Box Office Wednesday through Saturday 2 PM- 5:30 PM or call (503) 325-5922.

Musicians interested in joining the North Coast Symphonic Band should be able to read music and play at the advanced high school level. Many sections of the band are filled but there are immediate openings for clarinetists and percussionists.
