From: Janet Bowler Clatsop Community College NCSB Returns To The Liberty For POPS Concert The North Coast Symphonic Band will return to the Liberty Theater in downtown Astoria on Sunday, March 2, 2008 at 2 P.M. to present an afternoon of “pops” music. Director Lee Stromquist has selected songs that are familiar and entertaining including hits by Cole Porter, the William Tell Overture, highlights of the Broadway musical Oliver, and marches by John Phillip Sousa and Henry Fillmore. The NCSB Jazz Combo will make its debut and features well-known local musicians - vocalist Laurie Drage, trombonist Bob Joiner, and guitarist Dave Drury backed by Stromquist on piano, Jerry Pedersen on string bass and Dave Huber on drums. The group will play jazz standards including How High the Moon and Here’s that Rainy Day. Also featured in a solo role is trumpeter Jim Huber who will perform Leroy Anderson’s A Trumpeter’s Lullaby. Scott Taylor will conduct Highlights from Oliver and Dave Robertson will conduct the debut performance of his arrangement of Aura Lee. The highs and lows in the band will be featured when the tuba section performs St. Louis Blues and the flute section performs Swingin’ Shepherd Blues. Doors open at 1 P.M. and The Astoria Tuba Quartet will provide pre-concert entertainment starting at 1:30. The full band will perform starting at 2. Advance tickets are on sale at the Liberty Theater box office Wednesday through Saturday from 2 PM to 6 PM or by calling 503 325-5922. Regular admission is $10 and children under 12 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Musicians who are interested in joining the band should contact Lee Stromquist at (503) 861-1328. Musicians should be able to read music and play at the advanced high school level. Some sections of the band are full but there is a current need for clarinet and percussion players.
