NORTH OREGON COAST SYMPHONY TO PERFORM MUSIC TO WELCOME THE LIGHT OF SPRING

The North Oregon Coast Symphony will soon be presenting their second program of the 2007-2008 season. A Late Winter Concert: Music of Scandinavia will include Edvard Grieg's "Old Norwegian Romance with Variations," Carl Nielsen's "Helios Overture," and three works by Jean Sibelius, "Lemminkainen's Return," "The Swan of Tuonela," and "Finlandia."

The first performance will be on Friday, March 14, at 7:00 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center, 16th and Franklin in Astoria. The second will be on Sunday, March 16, at 3:00 p.m. at the Bay City Arts Center, 5680 A. Street in Bay City.

"What better way to celebrate the increasing light of Spring than with music that cheered the long, dark winters of Scandinavia?" asked conductor and artistic director Collin Heade.

Featured in this concert will be the orchestra's new tympanis which have been purchased with the help of a grant from The Clatsop County Cultural Coalition and several other generous community donations. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for each of the concert venues.

Tickets will be available at the door and in advance from any NOCS musician. Admission is $10; youths 12 and younger are admitted free with adults.

Composed of volunteer musicians ranging in age from high school to senior citizens, and coming from five counties, the nonprofit North Oregon Coast Symphony rehearses weekly in order to perform classical music for the community. High school seniors who have played a complete season with the orchestra are eligible to apply for a Sandra Stromquist Memorial Scholarship which is under the stewardship of the NOCS.

Sponsors of the 2007-2008 NOCS concert season include CCC Arts & Ideas and TLC Federal Credit Union. For more information about the orchestra or the scholarship fund, call (503) 368-7160.
