Joint Ways and Means Committee Says Yes to CCC’s Jerome Campus Redevelopment Project
Today in Salem, in a significant move for CCC, the Joint Interim Committee on Ways and Means voted to move Senate Bill 5555, which includes $4 Million for CCC’s Campus Renovation Project, to the floor of the legislature for a vote.
“This is wonderful news,” says Dr. Greg Hamann, President of Clatsop Community College. “It indicates state-level recognition that providing up-to-date, accessible college facilities to the citizens of Clatsop County is important for this region’s future. The College has worked diligently to bring this message to the legislature, but we could not have gotten to this point without the tremendous outpouring of support from a variety of sources. We’re very grateful to Senator Betsy Johnson and Representatives Debbie Boone and Brad Witt for their efforts, and to House Majority Leader, David Hunt, without whose support we would not have seen this important action occur today. The Oregon Community College Association has worked tirelessly on our behalf and all sixteen other community colleges in the state also provided steadfast support for our a capital construction funding request, demonstrating how remarkably united the community colleges are in helping each other meet the educational needs of Oregon’s citizens. Equally impressive and gratifying to us is how the Oregon Community College Student Association, a statewide organization representing community college students, adopted CCC’s capital construction funding need as its lobbying priority. And our own students spent many hours this week contacting key legislators urging their support for our capital construction needs.”
In the 2005 legislative session, the state allocated $7.5 Million toward CCC’s capital construction needs, which the College matched, bringing it’s initial capital construction funding pool of resources to $15 Million. The additional $4 million anticipated by today’s action will also need to be matched and the College is already actively pursuing promising sources for this and other additional funds for the Jerome Campus Redevelopment Project.
