Winter showers will bring a different sort of spring flowers to Clatsop Community College’s Library.

Last Thursday, with the start of Spring Term on the horizon, the faculty of Clatsop Community College was busy readying the library for a new phase of instruction. The faculty gathered in the library for a few hours to participate in a newly established Weed & Reseed activity. The mission was straightforward: ransack their academic sections and discard all outdated and irrelevant materials. Anything that contained information that could be considered damaging to a student’s research was to be tossed to the wind.

CCC Chemistry Instructor, Heather Goodfriend, was on hand to pull weeds. She observed that, “It’s fantastic that the college is doing this. As an instructor this is another avenue to enhance student learning. In my area, for example, the fundamentals haven’t changed but there have been numerous discoveries in the field since the 1960’s. What we found was that there were a lot of materials that weren’t relevant to the learning of our students. This activity gave us the chance to discard outdated items and make room for more up-to-date and advanced materials that will enhance the learning of our students today.”

Candice Watkins, the Reference and Instruction Librarian at CCC, was also pleased with the outcome of the activity. "This event was a great opportunity to update our collection with valuable input and participation from the faculty. I appreciate the instructors' willingness to get in there and get their hands dirty, as well as share their ideas. It was productive and fun."

In the spirit of fun, the upbeat attitude of the day was enhanced with the enjoyment of snacks, and gift cards to local coffee shops and bookstores were offered as prizes to four winners.

After the dust had settled roughly nine hundred items had been plucked from the shelves of Clatsop Community College’s library. Although some of these items may be given away, the majority will be retired to a recycler in Portland, OR; may they rest in peace.

Now that the weeding has been completed the process of reseeding can begin. As for the reseeding aspect of the activity the Library Staff will consider the needs of future teachers. "We want to know how instructors will be teaching in 5-10 years,” Ms. Watkins continues, “so that we'll have the appropriate resources to support their needs and those of their students." In addition to print sources, the library will continue to enhance its collection of electronic and multi-media sources.
