From: Caitlin Wright Clatsop Community College CCC Upward Bound Summer Academy Participants Share Their Knowledge Clatsop Community College is pleased to invite the public to join our Upward Bound Summer Academy participants for Project Presentation Night. This event will take place on Thursday, July 24th, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. at Clatsop Community College’s PAC (located at 16th and Franklin St. in Astoria, OR). The PAC is ADA accessible. This event is free and the college would like to encourage the public to attend and support our local youth’s educational ventures. The 2008 Upward Bound Summer Academy (UBSA), hosted by CCC’s Upward Bound program, brings students from Astoria, Seaside and Warrenton High Schools to the CCC campus. This year, the six-week program was held June 16th – July 24th, Monday thru Thursday from 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. The UBSA consisted of two components: experiential based learning and rotating academic seminars. Students involved in the program had the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities, including experiencing several educational and cultural field trips, taking academic classes, partaking in community service projects, hearing various outside speakers, and becoming acquainted with the CCC campus and some of the CCC faculty and staff. Additionally, students worked in teams to accomplish several community beneficial educational projects. This year, the 32 participants were grouped into five categories encompassing a broad range of experiential based learning projects: 1. Mud, Bugs and Research: Wetlands Restoration – This group worked with CREST and Fort Clatsop to collect and compile environmental data at an area set to be restored to a wetland and compared that data with both a restored and a pristine wetland. 2. A Glimpse of Invisible Cultures: Tribes of the Northern Oregon Coast – This group researched the history of the Native American tribes of our area and created a fun curriculum for middle school children around this history, as well as contributed their research to the bicentennial celebration board. 3. Clatsop County Teen Scene – This was a history/sociology group that studied how various pop culture and social movements have affected teens in our area over the past several decades. Students surveyed local residents for original research, and assembled their research into a booklet that will be distributed to local libraries. 4. Seek and Destroy: Plotting the Demise of Invasive Species – This group created some of the first mapping of phragmite stands that are invading our estuaries. Groups such as CREST will use the collected date to help determine how to effectively deal with the invasive species. 5. Poetry, Music and Writing – This group worked to develop writing skills by looking at popular music and poetry. This group provided a public reading for children at the Astoria Library and produced a CD of their work. CCC’s Upward Bound program is a 100% federally funded program. Their deep-seated commitment is to recognize that every student will need education beyond high school, to assist our local students to succeed in school and also make plans for an appropriate education afterwards. Project Presentation Night is a culmination of the UBSA and is an opportunity for the student participants to present and discuss the body of work that they have compiled during the six-week program. “We encourage the community to come to Project Presentation Night because it’s important for the students to see that the community cares about the efforts made on their behalf,” says Abby Bandurraga, CCC Upward Bound program coordinator. “It’s also important for students to understand that to be successful in both college and their work lives, they need to learn how to work in groups, conduct research, communicate effectively and present in public. For many students, this is the first time they are introduced to these skills; skills that they will not only utilize in college but for their high school junior and senior presentations as well.” For more information about Project Presentation Night and CCC’s Upward Bound program, please contact: Janet Miltenberger at (503) 325-2747.
