FREE CONCERT OF PATRIOTIC MUSIC ON JULY 3 & 4

A Red, White and Blue Fourth is the theme of the annual North Coast Symphonic Band July concerts to be presented on Thursday, July 3, at 7 P.M. in the historic Liberty Theater in downtown Astoria and on Friday, July 4, at 2 P.M. in the Cannon Beach City Park. Both concerts are free of charge to music lovers of all ages and will include familiar and patriotic music that all can recognize and enjoy.

Scott Taylor of Warrenton, Oregon, will conduct the band, assisted by Dave Robertson of Rockaway Beach, and Brian Bergman of Astoria. Taylor has picked musical selections that salute our American heritage – a combination of marches, show tunes and tributes to those who serve our country. Taylor says, “The mixture of tunes is familiar and entertaining and includes a song dedicated to the Coast Guard, two tunes that celebrate the campaign trail, and a western piece dedicated to pioneers, commemorating Oregon’s upcoming 150th birthday.” Dave Robertson will be the Master of Ceremonies for the event and conduct several of his arrangements for band, including a new one of vintage dance tunes called Fred and Ginger. Bergman will conduct a medley of familiar songs from the Civil War era called The Blue and the Gray. NCSB Principal Piccolo player Janet Bowler of Astoria and Guest Piccolo player Marc Grafe from Portland will be featured in many of the selections, including Red’s White and Blue March, Parade of the Tall Ships, and The Stars and Stripes Forever. Special guest conductor for The Stars and Stripes Forever at the Cannon Beach concert will be Jim Smith, former conductor of the North Coast Symphonic Band for twenty-two years.

A color guard from the U.S. Coast Guard Group / Air Station Astoria will present the colors at both concerts. Post members from American Legion Clatsop Post 12 will present the service flags at the Liberty Theater concert in Astoria while the North Coast Symphonic Band plays the military service hymns to honor veterans and active members of the military and their families.

Pre-concert entertainment for the July 3 Liberty Theater concert will be provided by jazz guitarist Dave Drury and starts at 6:30 P.M.

The July concerts conclude the twenty-eighth season of the North Coast Symphonic Band. The Astoria Liberty Theater concert is presented free to the citizens of the North Coast area courtesy of generous donations by patrons of the band. Donations for the 2008-09 season will be accepted at the door and are tax deductible. Matching donations made to the Oregon Cultural Trust are eligible for Oregon tax credit.

The Liberty Theater is located at 12th and Commercial in Astoria; auditorium doors will open at 6:15 P.M. the evening of the concert.

The July 4th concert in the Cannon Beach City Park is sponsored by the Cannon Beach Arts Association. Bring blankets or lawn chairs and sun screen or an umbrella for this open-air concert.

The North Coast Symphonic Band enjoys a partnership with Clatsop Community College as part of the Arts and Ideas program. For more information, call CCC at (503) 338-2473 or the band at (503) 325-2431.
