NORTH COAST SYMPHONIC BAND BEGINS CONCERT SEASON |
PRESS RELEASE FOR OCTOBER 25 TO NOVEMBER 2 Submitted by: NORTH COAST SYMPHONIC BAND BEGINS CONCERT SEASON “Feast of Sound” is the theme of the first concert of the 2008-09 season of the North Coast Symphonic Band. The concert will be held at 2 P.M. on Sunday, November 2, at the Clatsop College Performing Arts Center, 16th and Franklin, in Astoria. Brass Gone Baroque will perform pre-concert entertainment starting at 1:30 P.M. New conductor Larry Johnson has picked selections by Bach, Ravel, Sousa and British composer Phillip Sparke that come from a variety of musical traditions and celebrate the vast range of wind band musical heritage. Johnson has music degrees from the University of Puget Sound and the Cleveland Institute of Music. He has conducted wind ensemble, band and orchestra at Portland State University, Mount Hood Community College and Lewis and Clark College. Johnson was principal horn with Germany’s Philharmonia Hungarica, assistant principal horn with the Oregon Symphony, and has been a member of Seattle Opera’s Wagner Ring Cycle Orchestra since 1976. He was eager to accept the challenge of conducting the North Coast Symphonic Band because he had a great experience as guest conductor of the band in 2004. Johnson has friends in the North Coast area, is recently retired, and hopes that this opportunity to conduct the NCSB works out well for musicians and audience alike. Dave Robertson of Rockaway will return as Master of Ceremonies for the afternoon concert. Refreshments will be on sale in the lobby before the concert and at intermission. Proceeds benefit two Warrenton High School students who will tour Europe next summer with Oregon Ambassadors of Music. Tickets to the fall NCSB concert cost $10. Children twelve and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Advance tickets to the concert are on sale at Bach & Rock in Astoria. Tickets will also be available at the door starting one hour prior to the concert. Auditorium doors open at 1:15. Musicians in the North Coast Symphonic Band range in age from teenagers to septuagenarians and drive from near and far to play music together on Monday evenings. Potential band members should be able to read music and play at the advanced high school level. Many sections of the band are filled but there are immediate openings for clarinetists and percussionists. Interested musicians should call 503 861-1328 or 503 325-2431 or send email to jlbowler@charter.net for more information.
