Fall Term Enrollment Soars at Clatsop Community College

Classes started Monday at Clatsop Community College with an increase of nearly 20% over fall registration last year. Enrollment is up in nearly all areas, from Associate Degree programs to GED classes. By Monday afternoon, over 80 classes had reached full capacity, with registration still continuing. The college’s online course offerings are also drawing more students. Corresponding to this growth, the college has also seen an increase in financial aid applications.

Early analysis indicates that part-time students are leading this enrollment increase. Commenting on this trend, CCC President Greg Hamann says, “Community colleges are unique in welcoming part-time students and students who have other life obligations, such as family and work. It’s no surprise that, as such, individuals turn to education to increase their job opportunities, and they turn to community colleges. We’re trying to make sure that everyone has access to the programs they need to improve their work options.”

Clatsop Community College is not alone in experiencing dramatic enrollment increases. Registrations are up significantly at community colleges around the state. The high growth has followed a trend that started with the economic recession as unemployed Oregonians look to local community colleges for job training. State economists predict a “jobless recovery” through mid 2013. Students at community colleges are seeking training that will prepare them for work when jobs return and to compete successfully for the jobs that remain.

Clatsop Community College is an affirmative action, equal opportunity institution.
